I’m curious to know about other peoples local Zoo’s. So which is your local Zoo and what is the latest news from them?

My local Zoo is Marwell (in the Winchester area). Their latest news is about a tiger cub that was born back in March 2004.

You can read up on Marwell’s news on their website (http://www.marwell.org.uk/).

You can also find four webcams on the site.

Eight weeks ago, I was able to visit the Zoo, which sadly I’m not able to do very often. Of course I took lots of photos while I was there. I’m delighted to say (from a Timonaholic’s point of view, anyway) that there were five meerkat pups, at three weeks old, at the time. :)

Here are some of the photos I took: (Most of them are meerkats :P)

Those pups are ADORABLE!!!!!! :D

Well, my local zoo is the one and only London Zoo (http://www.zsl.org/london-zoo/index,18,ZI.html)! It's absolutely awesome, I love the place to bits - I used to have an adopted Leopard Gecko there.

I really hope to get a job there too, in the not too distant future, but it will involve quite a lot of work.

Thes latest news from the zoo is that the endangered Bermudian snails are successfully breeding at ZSL - they wrere shipped there as a last ditch attempt, and it seems to be working!

Some old pictures of the zoo, see halfway down the page (http://www.reepacheep.co.uk/archive/2003_01_05_archive.html#87072736)

Another local zoo is Battersea Park Zoo. I havent been there in years, but the vets that I work as a nurse are the offical vets for it, so I get to see their sick animals - yesterday we had one of their tamarins, Indy, in for a health check, as he is off to Ireland to get a girlfriend!! ;)

13.11.2005, 23:04
Well, hope he enjoys himself ;)

Out here we have the Detroit Zoo (http://www.detroitzoo.org). One of my fav. hangouts. I grab a roll of film, my old manual camera and spend a whole day there.

The lastest news is that the aging Elephants that were transferred to California are doing awesome. You can read about "Winky" and "Wanda" on the website. Also, the one Polar Bear that was born at the new "Arctic Circle of Life" exhibit is now one year old. Yay! :)

Other then that, here are some photos that I took at my last visit. I'll likely not be able to go back until spring. It's about time to batten down the hatches for another fun filled Michigan winter :-?

Well, here's one for now untill I get the rest scanned in. Enjoy!

What an interesting topic !

As for me I visit a zoo in Switzerland from time to time, although I live in Germany.

It's called "Zoo Basel" (http://www.zoobasel.ch/) but the website is only availabe in german :(

Still I got some nice pictures to show you. There were taken in july 2005 while a special "zoo night" took place.

One of two lionesses (http://www.pride-lands.de/gallery/albums/userpics/L%F6wen02.jpg)

A meerkat ! So cute and adorable... (http://www.pride-lands.de/gallery/albums/userpics/Erdm%E4nnchen02.jpg)
Another meerkat, also very cute ! (http://www.pride-lands.de/gallery/albums/userpics/Erdm%E4nnchen04.jpg)

A wolf pup (http://www.pride-lands.de/gallery/albums/userpics/Wolf02.jpg)

Another animal I don't know the english name of. In latin it is "Lutra canadensis" (http://www.pride-lands.de/gallery/albums/userpics/Otter01.jpg)

There are cheetahs and other wild animals as well but I did not upload any pictures of them.

Maybe Black Lion can post some of the picture he took in his local zoo in Karlsruhe (germany).

In the past I visited the local zoo her in "Karlsruhe(Germany)" very often. They had two lions, two snow leopards, two leopards and one jaguar in 2003. Today all of them apart from "Anne" had died because of age and cancer. But I hope you can enjoy the pictures nevertheless.

These are excellent photos, people. :)

Kirauni, that's an Otter in english, as correctly labelled in the URL; ...userpics/Otter01.jpg

14.11.2005, 13:54
Well if that's the case it's the same as in german.
Great onother word I don't need to learn ;)

Thanks for posting those nice pictures, Kanu. They truely are wonderful !

14.11.2005, 14:04
Those are some really great photos, Kirauni. Same with the ones by Black Lion.

I actualy "adopted" (sponsor) a North American River Otter at the Detroit Zoo. I'll have to see if I can find some pictures of him.

We have two zoos in Minnesota, the Minnnesota Zoo (could you guess?) and Como Zoo. (Do a Google search.) Whilst Como Zoo is free, the establishments I believe aren't as beautiful or elabourate as the establishments in the Minnesota Zoo, which costs money.

The Cincinnati Zoo I've been to... but they seem to take poor care of their big cats.

17.11.2005, 17:17
i would show you some photos but i dont have any zoo's round were i live but i have a safarie (bad spelling sorry) about ten minuits away.

19.11.2005, 17:24
Oh, I wish I lived only ten minutes away from my local zoo...

Can you tell us anything about the Safari? What's it called? Do they have a website?

I'd say she's rather lucky. I'm more than an hour away from any zoo here in Minnesota.

21.11.2005, 11:14
My nearest Safari is about 2 hours away... its the sister zoo to London Zoo, called Whipsnade. They transferred all their elephants and rhinos from London Zoo to there after a rhino attacked a keeper. I went there a couple of months ago, its a very nice place :)

I have the Dickerson Park Zoo here in town but it's not very big and only has like 2 lions!
This zoo only took us about 2-3 hours to go thru, with my nephew who was only 1 year at the time.

The St. Louis Zoo is like 3-3 1/2 hours away, depending on how fast you drive. I love it there. They have all kinds of animals and takes all day to go thru.

Aaww, that's so cute! I wish the Detroit Zoo carried meerkats. As far as I can remember the only things they had there were prarie dogs though.... *whimpers*..Yes, I'm a Timonaholic as well... so for me, getting to see Meerkats at anytime is a HUGE deal. Anyone know of any Zoos IN or AROUND Michigan that'd have em...?*shifty eyes*

Okay, so this is not so local for me, but I was in Tenerife last week. The island has many animal parks. But the one I visited this time was “Parque Las Aguilas”, which translates into “Eagle Park”. It is also known as “Jungle Park”.

It was a wonderful day, but it poured with rain for most of it, and lots of the animals were behind glass panels, so good photos were impossible. :(. However some had low glass panels, or nothing at all. So here are some rather wet animals from Parque Las Aguilas. :)

aww! did you find out why?

cute photos :)

12.02.2006, 19:38
No, there was no one to ask (They would have been Spanish, anyway). It looked like it had been removed surgically, as it was a flat stump. But it didn’t seem to mind not having a tail – it could still stand up on its hind legs and not fall.

Our local Zoo is the Wilhelma. It's not as modern as other Zoo's in Germany... But there are still cute animals...

Excellent photos there, Leopatra.

I’ve found the Parque Las Aguilas web site (http://www.aguilasjunglepark.com/). =)

EDIT: I've found a photo of the meerkat (http://www.aguilasjunglepark.com/SURICATA2.htm) that's lost it's tail, on the site.

Those are some awesome photos there Leopatra. I like the Polar Bear one. :)

I got the chance to visit my local zoo, Marwell again recently. Sadly it rained for most of it, but I did get some photos. :) The meerkats were being the most active and entertaining. :P I’m amazed just how much the pups have grown since my last visit. They were really fun to watch, as they didn’t quite take sentry duty seriously. Often when a play fight broke out, the sentry would come and join in, leaving no one looking out. :P And yes; half of these are meerkats again. :P

Those are some good pics everyone. Leopatra I REALLY like that snow leopard pic :D.

There are a few zoos in Florida, but my local zoo is not worth talking about it I really don't like it because most of their bigger animals have very little room to move around in and what really ticks me off is that they have a pair of endangered animals there called Amur Leopard ( on the info about them it said that there are only around 200 left.....) one of the leopards just paced around the whole time on the same side of the cage and the cage was small. Anyways on the brighter side there are two other zoos that I have been to and they were good zoos. Here are some pics from the two zoos. (the two zoos are the Jacksonville zoo and the Brevard county zoo here are the web sites if you want to see them http://www.jaxzoo.org/ http://www.brevardzoo.org/)

I'll have to make a special trip to the Atlanta Zoo sometime so that I can get some good pics. Of course I'm sure I'll be there every chance I get.

Are we all becoming professional photographers here or what? ^^

Great stuff *click-saves favs*

27.04.2006, 00:06
i thik in this day and age, when nearly everyone owns a digital camera, its hard not to take a good photo, as one can preview and reject shots before theyre shown to the world or processed.

obviously im not dissing anyonws skills here, it takes some smarts to produce good pics too, dont get me wrong, but it has become easier... before digicams I was a horrendous pic taker. now im marginally better, lol.

talking of pics, I took a picture of a monkey which came into work a while back, its from Battersea Park Zoo. it has problems with its tail, and we'd just put it under anasthestic (hence the ET tube tied round his head!)

I got to drive back to the zoo with the vet with this monkey in a carrier on my lap :D it was amazing! i had to keep poking it to make sure it was round from the anasthetic, hehe

This is such a cool topic ^^, Zoo's are the best. Every country i got to from now on i plan to visit as many zoo's as possible ^^. I have so much fun at zoos, I just love to sit back and watch the animals. Though reality does hit home, often aniamls are in captivity for good reason, but at times I feel sorry for the animals, having to put up with us nosey people... and surrounded by all those fences. Anyhoo!

Leopatra, i love your piccies! *Gasps* They are awesome! Mmmm, and I like everyone elses photo's too *nods and grins* :D

I managed to get another trip to Marwell today to see how the meerkats are getting on. :) It is now a year since I took those photo’s of the pups in my first post. I had a chance to talk to the zoo keeper for the meerkat enclosures, who was feeding four very eager males with live insects. (The enclosure we were at is the one that can be seen on the webcam found on the website). She told me that the four males in the enclosure were indeed the pups I had seen a year ago. There had been a fifth pup (a female), which died after they moved her into the other outside enclosure they have, along with another male, which is sadly on his own now (I got some cute photo‘s of him). She said they couldn’t join the males together, as the four, that were in front of us, had already rejected him from a past attempt. So they give the lone male a few more treats to try and keep him happy. She also told me that they have a female and male together in the third indoor enclosure (which is in the children’s section, so I’ve never seen them), but they aren’t overly hopeful for any new pups in the near future. They are hoping to get some new meerkats in from another zoo, but that’s still being discussed at the moment.

I didn’t get many good photo’s of the other animals, but lots of meerkat ones. :P

I kept thinking of Windrose when I took this one (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/Oxlade/100A0715.jpg) :P

I finally got this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaSCDPot19M) uploaded. It was taken during my last visit. Now the meerkat’s are starting to fight a bit more aggressively as they try and put each other in their places. :P

03.10.2006, 12:15
I've never seen fighting Meerkats before Albus. Actually, I didn't know they put each other in their places. But there is one more thing I wanted to know. Is is just my Codec or did you leave out the sound purposely?

Anyways it's a really intersting video, thanks for sharing :)

03.10.2006, 12:46
Yes, the sound is taken out on purpose. The sound is highly distorted with wind almost constantly hitting the microphone. It’s impossible to hear any noise the meerkats are making, sadly.

And as for putting each other in their places, I said “starting to fight a bit more aggressively as they try and put each other in their places.” I didn’t say they were being successful. I’d been talking to the zoo keeper, that day, about them, and she said that they were in the early stages of fighting for their hierarchy rights. She was saying that sometimes the fighting can get rough enough for blood to be spilt - nothing major, though; just light claw and bite wounds.

03.10.2006, 14:27

Meerkats indeed tend to fight for their places, they are not always that social as they are so often portrayed as.
I don't think you've seen the show 'Meerkat Manor', Kirauni, but there they also showed what happens when two different clans meet each other. They fight very hard for their territory, sometimes they even kill each other. After such a fight many of them are wounded.
But even inside a clan there can be conflics. The dominant females tend to be very agressive, especially because they want to avoid that other females in the group have babies as well - which is quite logical when you keep in mind that there's always a food limit for the wild living ones - and so the dominant females always try to get their babies through and so they show the other girls who's the boss which can even end up with them killing the other's babies. Of course the same counts for the males, but there are not that many conflicts I think. Once the dominant male has proven that he's worth his place he only shows the others who's the boss now and then.
It becomes difficult when another female or male decides to make the recent alpha step down to take in its place.
In other cases the younger ones who try to find out how far they can go end up in little tussles with other youngsters, but I don't think that this was just a tussle in your video, Albus.
They could indeed have fought for their places, maybe a dominant animal was included or the other ones wanted to make clear who is the one who gets food first after the alpha pair, etc., who knows.
Zoos often have to find solutions for these conflics. Too small exhibitions for example are a reason for conflicts because the others can't avoid the dominants' paths and they start wounding each other then, I have even heard of a zoo that had to give away their 'queen', because she would not let the other females having babies, but never got some herself.
It is always different and more difficult with zoo meerkats, because normally females or males who cause trouble will be thrown out by the dominant pair and they'll leave their territory then, but in zoos the 'thrown out' meerkats can't go anywhere, of course. :/

I was back at Marwell Zoo yesterday morning. I hadn’t actually gone to admire the animals this time, I’d gone as support for my father, who was running in a 10k race, called “Leg it for Lemurs”, to raise money for the zoo. Having said that, I couldn’t resist going to see the meerkats. Not when they were almost right next to the start/finish lines. :P One of the meerkats was running up and down one of the walls of the pen, making people laugh and joke about him wanting to take part in the race too. :P I did take some photo’s of the meerkats, but only a two are actually any good.

well, i didnt have a chance to take any photos worth showing you guys, but I did help to handle and examine a pregnant Coati! we also had a quick look around, its a lovely little zoo with things like small primates (we had acutally amputated the tail of one of the spider monkeys the day before), meerkats (theyve just had a new litter, so theres loads of cute ickle babies running about) and general small things (farm animals and such).

apparently not - the curator of the zoo told me that female meerkats are highly sought after by zoos here so they can't be in abundance - its 'cause only really the head female is supposed to mate, so if another female does then the females (if not all of them) in the litter are killed.. stops over population.

Reeps is right. I seem to recall reading somewhere that one zoo actually had to move their alpha female because she was stopping the other females from having pups, but wasn't getting any of her own.

Hmm, you know, come to think of it, I believe I had heard of something like that on "Meerkat Manor," in which a subordinate female had "accidentally" given birth to pups, which nearly screwed up everything... the family had to relocate, but the pups were too young to be transported or something like that. Watch the pups die or force the family to stay and fight the rival family to protect their home.

Well here's a bunch of pics I took but almost none of them are from zoo's...then again I wasn't sure if I should make an entirely different topic just to post them.

These are from Busch Gardens so its like a zoo:

These are various pics of landscapes and wildlife:

Hehe, thanks guys. I try to talk decent pictures but that doesn't always work lol.

I know as far as cuteness goes it doesn't beat the lion cub but I've got to say this is the cutest Hyena I've seen (another pic from Busch Gardens)

I finally got my clips of the meerkat running about at Marwell Zoo’s “Leg it for Lemurs” event, as I mentioned above, up online. =) So here it is. :P Click! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISMohjUHexU)

And those photos, Levin, are very good. :)

well i dont have any news on the zoo im near but just like to know if any of you have wroked at a zoo im considering getting a job there

15.09.2007, 12:48
i havent worked at a zoo yet, but i'd like to. I have really good connections with Battersea park zoo, which i might follow up someday, but for now im quite content treating zoo animals at work (im a vet nurse in an exotics practice so we get a fair few small zoo animals coming to us).
All I know about wanting to work in a zoo is that it's very competitive, especially f you want to get into the more popular places, such as london zoo, or a equivalent. you just need to keep checking their vacancies and get in when you can.

17.09.2007, 08:39
I don't work at a zoo so I'm not able to help you there, Sai. :lionsad
None the less, I took some nice photos again and I hope you enjoy them :)

aww i love those lions/wolf pics so cute

18.09.2007, 02:08
At our local zoo, Kristiansand Dyrepark, they just got some lions about a couple of months ago.
From left to right we have; Aragorn, Sera, Kila and Aslan.

They're just so adorable. Sadly I don't know the lionesses too well yet
(something which will hopefully change soon), but Aragorn like a big teddybear. No matter what he does or how loud he roars he just seems too cuddly, and Aslan, I swear, is so much like his name-sake it's freaky. lol

18.09.2007, 15:55
Ahh. those are some wonderfully shot photos Kirauni. Well done.

The weather is a bit cooler here in Atlanta, and I think it's probably safe to venture outside to the Zoo again, so I'll have to take some time out and grab the camera for some shoots. I'll post pictures once I have them, including the new Meerkat and Warthog exhibits which just opened recently.

18.09.2007, 19:09
Those are really nice images of your lions, Tojo. Interesting that one actually is called "Aragorn".

And I really look forward to your photos, Cobalt. I like warthogs, but I've never had the chance to see one in real life :(

18.09.2007, 21:04
Wow, stunning photo’s Kirauni. :)

I was able to go to Marwell Zoo today. =) It was a beautiful day for it too. The most recent news for the Zoo is the new Gibbon exhibition, which was opened only yesterday. There’s a new web cam for it too. While I did visit the new exhibit, I sadly didn’t get a chance to take any photos - it was very popular. In other news, the zoo has had a successful year in births, meaning there was a lot of young animals about. Including meerkat pups. :3 Anyway, here are some photo’s. :)

Nice photos, Albus :)
My nephew will love the "tower of Giraffes". Giraffs are his favourite animals and he collects everything he can get.

The meerkats are also very cute. How old are the pups by now?

19.09.2007, 12:10
Well I'm not 100% sure, Kirauni. But judging by their size and when the zoo website had it in their news, I'd place them at about five or six weeks old, at least.

21.09.2007, 05:10
Very nice Photos. The young Meerkats at our Zoo are already grown up and because I didn't see them during the last two visits anymore I reckon they have already found new homes.

Two of Five were killed by a Crow though :(

On other news we have a female Snow Leopad Cub called Lola:

And 3 Tiger Cubs, 2 males, 1 female, Rudi, Bagus and Pertama.

21.09.2007, 07:12
awww they're all so cute !

21.09.2007, 07:47
Lola is awesome, as are your pictures :)
I like the Lea & Lola one best, the picture with the green background. The snow leopard's fur and the background go very well together.

Hmm… This thread has been quiet for way too long…

Last Sunday (22/03/2009) I finally got another chance to visit Marwell Zoo again. So much has been going on around me recently that it seems like it’s been forever since I was last there. But anyway, I was able to pay a short visit, while once more supporting my father as he ran in the 10k charity race they hold every year. The weather was wonderful for it too. I did take a few photos of the animals, but the combination my usual bad skills and a slow reaction camera, that simply isn’t up to job of photographing moving animals, meant I didn’t really get anything really decent.

*Wants a new camera.*

Anyway… Here are the few decent ones. (Some of these photos were taken by another member of my family – see descriptions in links to learn which ones).
